CANTABRIAN BROWN BEAR SIGHTING
The Cantabrian brown bear (Ursus arctos) population in Asturias has tripled in recent decades. Adult bears with cubs and large males are sighted every year in the Cantabrian mountains, where they coexist with other characteristic species of European deciduous forests such as deer (Cervus elaphus) or wolf (Canis lupus). Looking for brown bears with your guide is the best way to get to know this natural heritage, and watching these wild animals roam freely can be an unforgettable experience. Essential on your next visit to Asturias. Ready to come?
The Cantabrian Brown Bear Sighting activity takes place entirely within the Somiedo Natural Park, and begins at the Interpretation Center and Tourism Office. We already have a guide! With the didactic resources of the Interpretation Center we will know the regulations and zoning of the protected area and, before going to the mountain, we will remember notions of safety and sustainability.
We are going to explore! Depending on the weather conditions and the behavior of the animals, we will go to different viewpoints to identify the habitat of the brown bear, and try to spotthe animals. After setting in the waiting post, we actively look for the animals with the telescope while our guide tells us the natural history of these valleys. The search lasts until sunset, when the activity ends, but by then, perhaps, we already have seen the bears!
