Primitive Way of St. James

In the beginning of the 9th Century, during a very peculiar and important time of Spanish history, the rests of the Apostle St. James were found in the North-West of the Iberian Peninsula. Islam had extended its territories until the folds of the Cantabrian mountain range. In the Northern side of these mountains a Christian territory remained unoccupied. This territory was the Kingdom of Asturias, whose king was Alfonso II “el Casto”, who placed the capital in Oviedo. This Asturian king institutionalized the pilgrimage to what later on would become Santiago de Compostela, by building a small temple where the nowadays famous cathedral was raised. The original pilgrimage way to Santiago starts in Oviedo, goes through Lugo and finishes in the proximities of Iria Flavia. This way through the Western lands of Asturias is currently known as the Primitive Way of St. James.

GEOFACE suggests you an itinerary through the remotes lands of Asturias in permanent touch with the local population. Walking or biking, we will visit the plentiful historic and artistic heritage that is hidden in the architecture, literature, gastronomy and landscape that we will encounter on our way. Our Way to St. James is also the way towards knowledge and adventure for a perfect and uncommon holiday.
